Getting started

What is KidStudy?

KidStudy is free learning at home for Australian children, in Australian English. It has four parts:

  • Writing: handwriting worksheets in Victorian Modern Cursive to print.
  • Reading: levelled books read aloud in an Australian voice, after your child has had a go.
  • Maths: practice from counting and shapes to place value, times tables, fractions, money and time.
  • Science: short animated lessons with something to try, a quick game and a badge.

The content follows the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.

Which ages is it for?

Writing worksheets cover Prep to Year 5. Reading, Maths and Science are for Prep to Year 3. Younger children will need a grown-up beside them, especially at first.

Is it really free?

Yes, for every family, teacher and school. There are no ads, no accounts, no subscriptions and nothing to buy, and there never will be. KidStudy is non-commercial.

Which devices does it work on?

Reading, Maths and Science are made for an iPad, held upright or on its side. They also work on phones and on computers in a current browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox). Writing worksheets are best made on a computer or iPad and printed on an A4 printer.

There is nothing to install. Just visit kidstudy.app.

Add KidStudy to the Home Screen (iPad and iPhone)

How do I add KidStudy to the Home Screen?
  1. Open kidstudy.app in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow pointing up).
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.

KidStudy then opens full screen from its own icon, like an app, with no browser bars to tap by accident.

Why has my child’s progress disappeared?

The most common reason: Safari and the Home Screen icon keep separate progress. Stars earned in Safari won’t show in the Home Screen app, and the other way round. Pick one, and always open KidStudy the same way. We suggest the Home Screen icon.

Progress can also be lost if the browser’s website data is cleared. See Progress and backups.

Sound

I can’t hear anything on the iPad.
  • Turn the volume up with the buttons on the side of the iPad.
  • If your iPad has a silent switch on the side, flick it so it doesn’t show orange. On other iPads, open Control Centre and check the bell icon isn’t set to silent.
  • Tap something on the page first, such as a word or the 🔊 Listen button. Safari only plays sound after a tap, so KidStudy never starts talking on its own.
  • If headphones or a Bluetooth speaker are connected, the sound may be going there. Check Control Centre, or turn Bluetooth off.
  • Still silent? Close the page and open it again.
The voice is quiet or cut off after recording.

On an iPad, the microphone being on can turn other sound down. KidStudy switches the microphone off as soon as a recording stops. If the voice still seems quiet, close the page and open it again.

Reading

How does the Reading app work?

Pick a book from the shelf. There are Stories grouped by level, plus Science books and Phonics books when they are available. Each book starts with a short warm-up of words, then your child reads the pages, answers a few questions, and gets a star.

The book doesn’t read itself first. Your child has a go, and help is there when they need it.

What happens when my child taps a word?
  • First tap: the word is said aloud.
  • Second tap: the word is said slowly, drawn out sound by sound, and sound marks appear under it, showing its sounds.

Words your child needed help with are shown at the end as Words to practise, and there is a button to make a handwriting sheet of the book’s words.

What does the Listen button do?

🔊 Listen reads the whole page aloud in an Australian voice, lighting up each word as it is read, so your child can follow along. It works best after your child has had a go at the page themselves.

What do the levels A to P mean?

Stories are levelled from A (the easiest) to P, like the levelled readers used in many schools. The shelf shows the school year that usually reads each level: A to E for Prep, F to J for Year 1, K to M for Year 2, and N to P for Year 3. Every child is different, so start where reading feels comfortable and move up when it feels easy.

What are the questions and stars?

After the last page, a few questions check what your child understood. Each question and answer can be heard by tapping 🔊. A wrong answer just asks them to try again. Finishing a book earns a star, and books read again earn more stars.

Can my child record their reading?

On devices with a microphone, a 🎤 button lets your child record themselves reading a page, then tap ▶ to hear it. The browser asks your permission the first time. Recordings are never saved or sent anywhere: they disappear when your child leaves the book. If you say no to the microphone, the button simply goes away.

Can I change the letters in the books?

Yes. Tap Aa at the top of the Reading app to choose the print: Reading book (Andika, with a and g as children write them), Everyday (Lexend) or Extra clear (Atkinson Hyperlegible, where b, d, p and q all look different).

Maths

How does the Maths app work?

Choose your child’s year with the tabs at the top (Prep to Year 3), then pick a topic. Each round of questions gets a little harder as it goes, starting at your child’s own level. Answers go in with the big on-screen number pad.

A first wrong answer brings a hint. A second shows the worked answer, and the question is saved to practise again later.

What are Today’s mix, Fix my mistakes and Quick facts?
  • Today’s mix: ten questions a day, with a new mix tomorrow.
  • Fix my mistakes: a round of the questions your child got wrong before. It appears when there are some to practise.
  • Quick facts: short games to build speed with number facts, where your child tries to beat their own best. A timer is off unless a grown-up turns it on by holding the ⏱ switch for a moment.
What do the stars and the bar on each topic mean?

Each topic shows up to three stars from your child’s rounds, and a bar showing how well they know it. The bar turns green when they are doing well, and gold when they have mastered the topic.

The small codes on each topic are Victorian Curriculum codes, for grown-ups who want to match a topic to school work.

Science

How do the science lessons work?

Choose a year (Prep to Year 3), then a lesson. Each lesson mixes:

  • Watch: short animated scenes, read by an Australian voice. Sometimes your child is asked to guess what will happen first.
  • Try: something hands-on to do on the screen.
  • Game: a quick game of questions, for stars.
  • Badge: earned by finishing the Try steps and the game.

Afterwards, your child can watch all the scenes again as one video. Many lessons also have Try it at home: a real experiment with things from the kitchen or backyard, to print on one A4 page, with notes for grown-ups.

Writing worksheets

How do I make a worksheet?
  1. Open Writing and pick your child’s year (Prep to Year 5).
  2. Pick a worksheet: Patterns, Letters, Numbers, Words, Joining letters, Sentences or My name.
  3. Change the options if you like: letter size, how much tracing, model letters, look-cover-write, shaded zones and a name and date line.
  4. Choose Download PDF, PNG of this page or Print.

Prep to Year 2 sheets use separate letters, and Year 3 to 5 sheets use joined cursive, as taught in Victorian schools.

How do I print at the right size?

Print on A4 paper at 100% scale, also called Actual size. Turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit” in the print settings, or the letters and lines will come out smaller than intended.

Can I use my own words?

Yes. On the Words and Sentences sheets, choose your own words instead of the built-in ones, such as this week’s spelling list, and add a sheet title if you like. You can also type your child’s name for the My name sheet.

Everything is made in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

Is there a left-handed option?

Yes. Tick Left-handed under Options. It adds a second model at the end of each row, where your child’s hand won’t cover it, and a tip on the sheet.

Can teachers copy the worksheets?

Yes. You may print and copy them free of charge for personal, family and classroom use. Please don’t sell them. See the Terms of use.

Progress and backups

Where is my child’s progress kept?

Only in the browser on the device your child uses. It is never sent to us, so there is no account to log in to and nothing we can restore for you. That also means:

  • clearing Safari’s website data (or the browser freeing up space) can wipe it;
  • Safari and a Home Screen icon each keep their own progress;
  • progress on one device doesn’t appear on another by itself.
How do I back up and restore progress?

On the home page, scroll to For grown-ups:

  • Back up progress saves a small file with all your child’s stars, scores, badges and settings. On an iPad, save it to Files or email it to yourself.
  • Restore progress lets you choose that file to put the progress back. It replaces what is on the device for anything in the backup, and leaves everything else as it is.

Back up now and then, especially before updating or resetting a device.

We have a new iPad. How do we move progress across?
  1. On the old iPad, open KidStudy the way your child usually does (Safari or the Home Screen icon) and tap Back up progress. Save the file to iCloud Drive in Files, or email it to yourself.
  2. On the new iPad, add KidStudy to the Home Screen and open it from the icon.
  3. Tap Restore progress and choose the backup file.

Privacy and safety

Is KidStudy safe for my child?

We built it to be. There are no accounts, no ads, no chat, no links to social media, no analytics and no cookies, and nothing is loaded from other websites. Your child’s progress stays on your device. Read the full Privacy policy.

Something’s wrong

A page looks broken or won’t load.
  • Reload the page (in Safari, tap the reload arrow in the address bar). In a Home Screen app, close it by swiping it away and open it again.
  • Make sure the iPad is up to date: Settings › General › Software Update. Safari updates with iPadOS.
  • On a computer, try the latest version of Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
I found a mistake, or have an idea.

Thank you! Please email [email protected] with KidStudy in the subject. Tell us the page (the address in the browser is perfect), the device, and what looks wrong. A screenshot helps a lot. More on the Contact page.

Please don’t send your child’s full name, school or photos. We don’t need them to help.
